Description
Two of 11 life size husband and wife statues that are part of the Davis monument in Hiawatha, Kansas. In this image, his wife, Sarah, is depicted as an angel. The Italian marble statues of the Davises were striking in their detail and accuracy. The cost of the memorial was staggering in a small town during The Great Depression. The town had pleaded with Mr. Davis to contribute some of his fortune to the town to build a hospital. Mr. Davis refused and lived a quiet, frugal, childless life with his wife Sarah. When she died, he began installing many statues of himself and his wife together in different stages of their 40 year marriage.
